The Israelites

I’ve been listening to The Israelites since MySpace…  guardians of old school Jamaican style ska✨ Last weekend these legends performed at the Twilight, right here in Portland, Oregon. I was blessed to cover it for KPSU.

Over the past 36 years their line up has shaped and shifted, but always impressed. Rich Moonstomp is the founder and frontman of The Israelites. I really enjoy his singing! His smooth voice is a perfect pairing for ska. The rest of the current crew has been solid for quite some time and going strong.

Their performance at the Twilight was every bit as amazing as I thought it would be. I really had a fun night! The brass section blew my mind… their trombone player was incredible. The keys were fire, amplifying their retro angle. You could really see how much playing this music makes them happy. I’ve attached some video and pictures from the show, so that you can share in the experience. Please check them out!

A ska show like this is a whole vibe. There was a diverse and friendly audience… seasoned skins, hardcore fans, neighborhood rascals,  youngsters tearing up with REAL authentic ska style dancing, reggae folks, hippies, all kinds… but also a nice welcoming feel.

Rich plans on continuing these “Kingston Club” shows quarterly, featuring other local ska bands opening for The Israelites. I’m already looking forward to the next one, in May.

One of the things I most admire about The Israelites, is their devotion to their own true vision. They maintain an incredible level of musical craftsmanship, proudly praise God in their music & show genuine respect for the traditions and history of ska. Their authenticity is deep.

If you enjoy classic ska music, be sure to give The Israelites a listen. And definitely check out the upcoming Kingston Club shows!

Bless up Israelites, I’ll see you then!

Love, SuzyQ💕
