Episode 2: Jerry Coyne

My chat with biologist and evolutionary geneticist Jerry Coyne, author of “Why Evolution is True” and “Faith vs. Fact: Why Science and Religion are Incompatible.”
He is one of the most vocal proponents of evolution and rationalism alive, having written over a hundred scientific papers and hundreds of articles and critiques. Professor Emeritus at University of Chicago, Dr. Coyne uses his formidable intellect to challenge pseudoscientific beliefs thought uncontroversial by many people.

While he was visiting Portland I attended several of his lectures on the topics of pseudoscience and determinism. Pseudoscience is essentially junk science which defends nonsensical, untenable beliefs. Someone who purchases healing crystals or power bracelets, for example, are victims of pseudoscience. Creationism, the notion that the world is only 6,000 years old, is a pseudoscientific claim Dr. Coyne has fought against for years. His talk on determinism was a mind-blowing trip through neuroscience and philosophy, discussing the hot topic of free will. Dr. Coyne’s lectures shook my intellectual foundation, I’m hoping it creates the same dissonance for those who listen to the podcast.
