Robert Glasper Experiment – ArtScience
Written by DJ Ekonomiks on January 9, 2017
Hey all! Welcome back to PSU, or if you’re not at PSU. Welcome back to Mood Swings! I’ve got a really special album for you today. I had the privilege of seeing the Robert Glasper Experiment in concert at Revolution Hall over break. The played mostly stuff off their new album ArtScience. I didn’t even know that they had released a new album but I was a huge fan of both their Black Radio 1 & 2 records so I was stoked. When they started playing I was completely blown away by the technical skill, musicality, and raw energy that the band was presenting. Every song was so tight each musician was holding the groove down like it was a wild animal. I was in awe to say the least. I went home and immediately downloaded ArtScience. I’ve been spinning it on the regular ever since.
My favorite thing about this record is how well everything meshes. From the vocoded singing (performed on a keytar) or the creamy piano licks that Glasper himself is laying down, to the driving grooves of the live drums and drum machine. Everything fits so perfectly. It paints a picture of one important theme: love. This whole album is about positivity and supporting the ones who are closest to you. That’s a message I can definitely get behind.
I hope you guys enjoy ArtScience as much as I do, this is definitely one of my favorite records from 2016. Here’s to another great season of Mood Swings and another awesome year!
