Haywyre – The Voyage

It’s been a pretty rough last little bit for a number of reasons. Stress seems to grab hold and never let go. Last week I felt trapped in a vicious cycles of pessimism. It was bad. One of the things that never fails to pull me out of a slump, though, is music. The energy, the drive, and the movement that music brings to my life is one of the most powerful things on the planet. That’s why I listen, that’s why I have this show, to spread the emotions that good music can bring to myself and anyone willing to invest the time.
This album, “The Voyage” by Haywyre, is breathtaking. It’s a shmorgishborg of genres, mixing everything to classical orchestration to jazz and the airy, electronic, bass music, and synth of the modern day. Haywyre is a master at crafting unique and spacey soundscapes that capture the idea of interplanetary travel perfectly. One thing I love about this album is that I actually feel like I’m on a voyage to another solar system while I’m listening. There are chill, peaceful lullabies like “Breathe” and “Gravity”. There there are frantic, driving moments like on the songs “Catalyst” and “Crimson”. It all sums up to a fantastic conclusion with the last 3 songs – which I believe are best if heard in sequence – “Prelude to the Voyage”, “Trigger”, and “The Voyage”. This album is a cosmic journey in an hour and I could not ask for a better distraction from the turmoil of real life.
I’ve played Haywyre’s music before, but this album has to be his magnum opus. It’s masterfully crafted, it carries a ton of energy, and it flows like some fresh maple syrup. I love the atmosphere and the positive energy this album brings me. Overall, it is one of my favorite electronic albums of all time.
