Bonobo – “The North Borders”
Written by DJ Ekonomiks on November 21, 2016
This week I’m spinning an amazing record from an amazing artist. Bonobo is a hard artist to fit into a genre. He’s like a blend of hip hop, house music, jazz, and classical. His beats are so unique and sound super organic. I’ve never heard of someone sampling so fluidly and blending the instrumentation like Bonobo. His soundscapes are absorbing and immersive. It’s like an ocean wave crashing overhead. However, he mixes so well that all the elements are distinguishable if you’re listening closely. The atmosphere on his record “Black Sands” is exactly like the album cover suggests. It’s a dense rainforest next to a beautiful ocean. This record “The North Borders” has a driving, icy sound to it. The synths all shimmer over top of a tribal-sounding house beat. His composition is also impeccable. He’s able to build a beat up from nothing, making it swell into and overwhelming force composed of numerous layers of sound, then he breaks it down to nothing again in a matter of seconds.
