Left of the Dial: “A Soundtrack to Mediocrity II: The ‘No Refunds’ Edition” 5/17/18
Written by Chris-R on May 17, 2018
DON’T LET THE TITLE FOOL YOU. While sarcasm is abundant in the KPSU studio, mediocre music is NOT. Welcome back to Left of the Dial, where we take you from the golden age of vinyl and beyond. I’m your host Chris-R, playing deep cuts from artists we all know and love, and some extra goodies from more obscure but equally wonderful acts. We’re kickin’ it off with the help of Frank Sinatra and The Count Basie Orchestra playing a marvelous rendition of “Come Fly With Me” Live at The Sands, which is sure to put some extra pep in your step. Frankie is followed up by some other Blue Eyed Soul(ish) acts, including Bobby Caldwell and Trip-Hop Juggernauts Massive Attack. Our playlist also encounters a knock on the door from some New Wave acts who request to be let in to the playlist, so I welcomed Oingo Boingo & The English Beat to the party. Although there is so much to love about the oldies, newer material is also appreciated on Left of the Dial, including some cuts from Art-Rocky groups from the turn of the century such as Porcupine Tree and Yeah Yeah Yeahs. New Orleans piano is given a quick look-over from legendary player Professor Longhair and an additional cover of one of his protégés Dr. John by former- The Jam frontman who does an incomparable rendition of “I Walk On Gilded Splinters.” Other notable superstar musicians who appear on our quest include the varied talents of James Taylor, Steely Dan, The Eagles, and more!
Anywho, less talk and more rock! Enjoy this weeks freshly curated episode of Left of the Dial.
