Written by DJ Mkulima (The Farmer) on February 15, 2017
Last night Hillary Bryan, Portland local spoken word poet, composer and selectress came on to KPSU’s Learning to Grow with DJ Mkulima (The Farmer) to share her work under the moniker ‘Darling Instigatah‘ from her album Soul Soundz. We had a chance to discuss her background in life and as a musician. Hillary also had a chance to share some of the influences behind her music including her passion for Reiki and frequency healing practices. Her poetry artfully weaves the feelings, frequencies and emotions of the city streets and the things in life most worth living. Take a listen and fall in to a state of creative bliss.

Hillary began her musical training at age five on piano, ballet & choir, followed by training in acoustic guitar & fine arts. In the late 90’s & at the age of 16, she landed an internship at a recording studio & record label in Chicago where she learned about music distribution, A&R, PR and audio production / archiving. This led to an apprenticeship in sound engineering for both live and studio sound.
By the age of 18 she had her own agency managing A&R / PR & event production for record labels, musicians, DJs, bands & poets. At the same time she began to perform as a dj selecting reggae, dub & jazz/blues/rare grooves around inner city Chicago.
Fast forward to today… you have an accomplished artist & music business professional. Hillary has received two grants from organizations affiliated with The Grammy Association and released her debut album “Soul Soundz” (“Dub Poetry” on Chicago’s Southport Records) in 2012.
She has performed on bills alongside heavyweight talent such as Subatomic Sound System, Mista Chatman, Junior Reid, Tipper, DJ Redlox, Lady D, Diz, Tuff Lion, Queen Omega, Pablo Moses, Slim Kid3 & King Britt to name a few.
Keep your ears on the instigatah for news on her sophomore release, “heaven’s dub” & the forthcoming “Dolce Dub Delight.” She may even make another KPSU appearance with this up and coming release!
