In the Gutter #7: Dr. Susan Kirtley
Written by Cameron Grow on January 26, 2022
Today, my guest is Dr. Susan Kirtley, founder and director of Portland State University’s Comic Studies program, Eisner winning author of Typical Girls, and Lynda Barry.
Kirtley is always a familiar face in any comics event at PSU and I was amazed at how much time and energy she put into my humble little radio show. I learned a lot and really enjoyed how deep she dived into comics academia.

She also requested The Smiths as her outro song, which I really appreciated. So I’d say this interview was a success all around.
If you have any interest in applying for the Comic Studies Program or just want to be included in the Newsletter use this link. You can email: [email protected] to learn more.

If you have any interest in the Comics Studies society, you can find them here: https://comicssociety.org/ while Inks the comic studies society magazine can be found here: https://inks.comicssociety.org/
There’s also: THE INTERNATIONAL COMIC ARTS FORUM – Home to check out.
I credit Dr. Kirtley for making PSU a place where doing a comic talk show isn’t a crazy idea. For anyone interested in studying comics you should definitely talk to her or just take a moment to appreciate her work.
