Float Tank Broadcast Oct. 22nd, 2017: Benoit Pioulard Interview
Written by Casey McCarthy on October 23, 2017
A couple of weeks ago, a favourite musician of mine Thomas Melcuh, known as Benoit Pioulard came to Portland from his home of Seattle Washington to play a show at The Old Church in SW PDX with Austin TX instrumental band Balmorhea. Being the nice personable guy that he is, Thomas was quick to respond to an email that I sent him only about a week before the show to see if arranging an in person recorded interview were possible. Side note: Tom and I had attempted a phone interview back in the Spring but due to technical difficulties in the DJ booth, things went south real quick and the interview did not extend past the first question. Anyways, we did end up meeting up at The Old Church a few hours before the show after Tom had snuck away to Ground Kontrol for a pre-show pinball session while Balmorhea performed sound check. After micing up in a basement hallway, we were booted by a staff member and two police (police were there on separate business). We were directed to a space that was warranted for an interview which was actually much more comfortable (real seating and near by windows) and more acoustically pleasing than a linoleum covered hallway. Once mic’ed up for good, we talked about his most recent work Lignin Poise as well as other random yet interesting factoids about the man behind some of the most beatific music my ears have had the privilege to hear.
For this show, I interwove the recorded interview between the tracks of Lignin Poise, ending with a surprise cameo of two songs from his 2012 release Hymnal.
