Inspired by the upcoming lecture Kathleen Hanna is giving at Revolution Hall here in Portland, KPSU’s showcase ‘From the Faults’ presents a re-edited episode of ‘On The Shoulders of Giants.’
This episode takes a look back through the history of chart-topping female bands from the 2000’s to the 1920’s, and a discussion of the so-called “Riot Grrrl” scene in Olympia in the 90’s with an interview with Star Athena of The Flying Tigers and The Sub Debs.
Kathleen Hanna, for those not already fans, made history as the lead singer of Bikini Kill and de-facto standard-bearer of the Riot Grrrl movement in Olympia, WA. She went on to form Julie Ruin and Le Tigre, and is considered by many to be one of the most influential artists of the 1990’s in any music scene. Just how influential? Even if you didn’t know or care about the Riot Grrrl scene (and why is that, BTW?), Kathleen Hanna was the one who wrote on a wall one night that ‘Kurt Cobain smells like Teen Spirit.’ If you are not sure of how Nirvana and Kurt Cobain specifically were fundamentally attached to the Riot Grrrl scene of the 90’s in Olympia, and didn’t know that artists as diverse as Bikini Kill, Le Tigre, Calvin Johnson, Beck, and Sleater-Kinney blossomed out of it – you might just need to listen to this show and go to this lecture.
