KPSU’s Recommendations:

The struggle with music festivals is always deciding which artist’s set to choose from. Especially with multiple stages, and oftentimes there may be overlap between your favorite acts, it may be difficult to get from one stage to another in time, and maybe you don’t know which artist to stick around for while you wait for the band you came to see. Tariq and Joe hope to ease your stress, and make your decision making easier. Here are a few of the artists Tariq and Joe chose to highlight in this write-up, and a few of many they chose to cover at Warped Tour.

Blessthefall (Tariq’s Pick)
FFO: Escape the Fate, The Word Alive, Alesana, Of Mice & Men
Playing the Mutant North Stage and formed in early 2004, Blessthefall is an American metalcore band from Scottsdale, Arizona. They are currently signed to Fearless Records. The band currently consists of Beau Bokan (clean vocals, keyboards), Eric Lambert (lead guitar), Jared Warth (Unclean vocals, bass guitar), Elliott Gruenberg (rhythm guitar) and Matt Traynor (drums, percussion). Beau Bokan and Elliot Gruenberg are the only two who are not original members; joining the band in 2008 and 2011 respectively.
Blessthefall currently has five studio albums. The latest four are all with Beau Bokan on lead vocals. Their style has been described as “Christian metalcore” (although Beau Bokan has stated that they don’t want to be considered a Christian band), screamo and post-hardcore. “Hey Baby, Here’s That Song You Wanted” off their sophomore album Witness is their most well known song to date.

Courage My Love (Joe’s Pick)
FFO: Tonight Alive, Against the Current, Pvris, The Nearly Deads
Playing the Full Sail Univeristy Stage, Courage My Love is a three piece rock band from Kitchener, Ontario, Canada. The band consists of twin sisters Mercedes and Phoenix Arn-Horn, and bassist Brandon Lockwood. The group gained traction after participating in a Battle of the Bands back in 2010, and soon after were signed by Warner Music Canada. Three EPs were released before the band made their debut on 2015’s Becoming, and following their debut with their most recent release Synesthesia (February 2017).
Synesthesia was an evolution for the trio and their sound. With the incorporation of more synths, the trio produced an album that is mix of pop, punk, indie, and dance. Speaking on the album, they describe their new sound as a natural progression, not a conscious decision, and felt that the addition of keys and synths were what the songs on the record needed.

Futuristic (Tariq’s Pick)
FFO: Devon Terrell, Dizzy Wright, Hopsin, KYLE
Playing the Left Foot Stage, Futuristic is the alias of Zachary Lewis Beck. He started rapping when he was in 2nd grade with his brothers in a talent show at their school. He continued with rapping into his adulthood because it was an effective way to focus on himself while dealing with depression.
Futuristic has managed to create a sound where pop and indie rap meet. He made his debut in early 2012 with his album “Dream Big”. A year later he dropped his sophomore album “Chasing Down a Dream” and he went on a tour to support its release as well. During this time in 2013 is when Futuristic started growing a social media following. His fan base grew large enough that his self-released 2015 album, The Rise, was listed on the Billboard 200 albums chart. Futuristic’s latest album “As Seen On the Internet”, also hit the top 200. The album included guest appearances by rapper Hopsin and pop duo Karmin.

Watsky (Joe’s Pick)
FFO: Wax, Spose, Lil Dicky, Hoodie Allen
Playing the Left Foot Stage is Watsky, born George Virden Watsky. Watsky is a multitalented artist: a poet, author, actor, and hip hop artist from San Francisco. He broke out as a rapper when his video “Pale Kid Raps Fast” (a youtube video of his original rap over Busta Rhymes “Break Ya Neck”) went viral, with the support of Reddit and youtuber Philip Defranco. He went on to record four studio rap albums.
Watsky’s latest release is 2016’s x Infinity. It’s inevitable and hard for people not to compare him to the likes of Eminem, especially with his speed and rap style. Watsky brings something extra with him into his rap that separates and makes him unique from the common rap names. As an author and poet, Watsky brilliantly weaves his thoughts and experiences into his lyrics; both challenging us as listeners to take action and giving us a glimpse of his mind. Watsky is already a well known name to listeners and fans within the rap genre, but x Infinity is the album with the potential to make Watsky a household name.
