Viking Twang Show 104, October 12, 2016

Good morning, welcome to Viking Twang Episode 104. I’m Randy Black, happy to have you here as always. It appears summer has come to an end and we’re into one of our glorious Oregon fall seasons. So we’re going to embrace the season with an entire show of rain songs. We’ll start out with a little optimism.

– Turkey Red; W.C. Beck & the Portland Country Underground.
– Ain’t Gonna Rain No More; Eight Unidentified Girls. Recorded by Alan and John Lomax at the Kirby Industrial School in Atwater, Alabama in October, 1934.
– Ain’t Gonna Rain No More; Hoyt Ming and the Pep Steppers. This family band from Tupelo was big in the 1920s and 30s, when they were recorded by Ralph Peer, and made a comeback in the 1970s. This was recorded at the Festival of American Folklife in 1974.
– It Looks Like It’s Never Gonna Rain; The Brainstormers. The Brainstormers are Vashon Island’s Mark Graham and the Bay Area father-son team of Tom and Patrick Sauber. Graham wrote this after hearing about a Dust Bowl survivor who went seven years without seeing rain.
– Rainmaker; Old and in the Gray. Peter Rowan wrote and sang this song from the 2002 album by the reconstituted version of the super group Old And In The Way, with David Grisman, Vassar Clements, Herb Pederson, and Bryn Bright.
– Light Rain Blues; Taj Mahal. The coolest person on the face of the planet wrote and recorded this on 1969 album, De Old Folks At Home.
– Light Rain; Geoff Muldaur. One of my favorite blues singers and member of the Jim Kweskin Jug Band; he recorded this on his 2000 album, Password.

We’re going to come back to the Northwest with Deadwood Revival, the husband-wife duo from the Olympic Peninsula, who have what many here are suffering from.

– Rainy Day Blues; Deadwood Revival. Kim Trenarry and Jason Mogi, from their 1995 self-titled album.
– Steady As The Rain; Dolly Parton. Dolly wrote this song for her 1999 album, The Grass Is Blue.
– Saddle In The Rain; John Prine. From his 1975 album, Common Sense.
– I Dig The Rain; The Kurtz Project. The house band for the famous original Portland all-ages punk club, the X-Ray Café. The band is café owners Tres Shannon and Benjamin Arthur Ellis, Marney Thompson, and Travis Kurtz. From the 2000 release, X-Ray Visions.

We go into the home stretch of our rainy day music with local legends The Freak Mountain Ramblers with a sad tale of sororicide.

– Wind and Rain; Freak Mountain Ramblers. Our longtime favorites; a traditional song from their 2001 debut album, with Kevin Richey taking the lead and Forest Bloodgood on the fiddle.
– Blue Eyes Crying In The Rain; Roy Acuff. This was written by the great songsmith and producer Fred Rose, with Acuff the first of many to record it, in Hollywood in January 1947. That’s Sonny Day Tamvourin on accordion.
– Early Morning Rain; Tim O’Brien and Darrell Scott. Tim and Darrell recorded Asheville shows in 2006 and 2007 and put them on this album in 2012. That’s a Gordon Lightfoot song.
– Good Rain; The Trail Band. This is Rindy and Marv Ross from Quarterflash with a band meant to play native Oregonian music. Lex Browning, along with Daryl Burgess, wrote it and Lex sings it.
– Pourin’ Rain; Calobo. The legendary late 90s Northwest jam band that included Caleb Klauder, Michele Van Kleef and Decemberists Jenee Conlee-Drizos and Nate Query. Band leader David Andrews wrote and sings this song, recorded live at the Crystal Ballroom in May, 1998.
– Twang Theme; Countrypolitans.
