Reality Is Less Than Television
Written by Blakbeard on March 23, 2017
Sometimes it’s not so easy to differentiate mediated experience from direct experience. To quote Brian O’Blivion, “Television is reality, and reality is less than television.” And so, the simulacra precess, precede, and pre-empt.
But wait, there’s more! The plasticity of memory is only one dimension of ambiguity. Orthogonal to that is the question, “What is real?” An android, whether made of gears and pulleys or flesh and bone, is no more or less real than a human machine. And make no mistake, drill down to the microsopic level and all you’ll see in the body is tiny machines operating with inconceivable complexity. And yet, there’s no consciousness directing any of it. Consciousness is just a by-product.
