‘Some Feelings’ + Track Commentary w/ Julia Nunes
Written by Anna Leuning on September 25, 2015
Oh man. Welcome to an hour of radio that is equally happy and heartbreaking with special guest Julia Nunes. Julia’s new album, Some Feelings, is out today so, to celebrate, Julia and I chatted about each track. She tells me about her family’s wonderfully supportive reaction to her break up, making the decision to be happy, wanting to make out so bad that she wrote a song about it and other feelings.
Julia recorded “Some Feelings” last summer with friend and producer Joanna Katcher at Joanna’s studio, Nice Manners, in Mount Washington, CA. Julia says that recording the album was, “like the beginning of me embarking down the first record that I was like, ‘whoaaa this one is different, and better, and I love it!'” A year gone since recording, and the album still feels relevant. It covers “every spectrum of feeling in the book, I go from the saddest sad songs to the happiest happy songs.”
Only a day old and the album already has a history. To catch you up: “Some Feelings” was crowd funded through Kickstarter. 3,258 fans raised $134,403 to help her make it happen. The first official music video for the album came out this week– “Don’t Feel” featuring Amir Blumenfeld (you know him from College Humor’s “Jake and Amir” and his podcast “If I Were You“). Julia also released a behind the scenes style video about the making of “Something Bad,” that gives you a look into her process and the studio where she recorded it. And finally, this July Julia premiered her new podcast, “That Was Us.” On the podcast, Julia has a friend read something from their past, something that shows they are a different person than they used to be. Each episode is funny, interesting, and often quite insightful.
Our conversation was too long and too full of good stories to fit into an hour so be on the lookout for an uncut version of our conversation here in the future.
Special thanks to Julia of Julia Nunes. Now go buy her album.
