Woods @ Mississippi Studios, July 22nd
Written by Joshua Justice on July 1, 2016
Woods are a band who have made a career out of reinventing themselves. From the early, lo-fi crooning found on tracks like “Keep It On” to the rambling west coast folk of 2014’s “Shepherd”, the band remains at once instantly recognizable and wholly original with each new release. On their ninth LP, City Sun Eater in the River of Light, the band has once again pulled from a host of new influences. The horn arrangements are more prominent than on past releases, the guitars and the message somehow at once urgent, but hopeful.
The psychedelic jams are still there (see: “The Take”), but there are enough groovy, breezy jams to earn the album a spot on summer playlists. The LP closes with “Hollow Home” which feels almost an antithesis to tracks like “I See In The Dark.” All of this is to illustrate that City Sun Eater in the River of Light has a little something for everybody.
On July 22nd, the group brings the album to life at the always fantastic Mississippi Studios. Doors at 8pm, show at 9pm. Cian Nugent and The Lavender Flu open the show.
