Thom Goes Crazy And Stuff

Written by on February 19, 2011

Well Kiddies, it’s here. Radiohead’s eighth studio LP, King of Limbs, has leaked a day early. Or it hasn’t. Those crazy buggers over in Radioheadland decided to push the release up from it’s original date (tomorrow), possibly in order to give people the option to pay for the record instead of just copping a pirated version. I get it, folks are antsy. We want new Radiohead.
So how is it? Well, I’m only 1 1/2 listens deep but, I gotta say… I’m not sure yet. Some things that do stand out so far however, there is a noticable lack of guitar on the majority of these songs. Further, the songs that do have guitar utilize the instrument as a decorative, rather than structural, ingredient. In fact, it feels much more like a Thom Yorke record than a Radiohead album, akin to his 2006 solo album, The Eraser. Lots of electronics and thumping bass, supporting Yorke’s trademark croons. As with the last five or so RH releases, I think it’s going to be a few days, maybe weeks, before I really have a firm grasp of the album as a whole, but I’m coming around. I’m coming around.
Here’s the album’s first single, Lotus Flower, which features copious amounts of Thom Yorke spasmodically writhing about and looking all kinds of creepy.
