I first heard Thirdstory through their connection to Eryn Allen Kane–a soulful voice that’s been featured on Chance The Rapper’s album–I’m always searching for songs/artists that she’s collaborating with. What I didn’t expect to happen however, was to discover three men who have an ear for some of the most beautiful harmonies you could hear. The acoustic version of their song“Still In Love” feels like a gospel song, raw and full of feeling, it punches you in the right spot.
The Thirdstory trio of Ben Lusher, Richard Saunders, and Elliot Skinner came together in 2015 in New York City. They gained popularity through their YouTube channel where they focused mainly on covers, but they always put their own spin on it–like this dreamy cover of Drake’s “Hotline Bling”. However, they weren’t going to stop there. Their innovation with music has allowed them the space to create content that breaks through many genre confines.
Their song “Searching For a Feeling” first released on their EP Searching, was produced by Malay who has worked with artists like ZAYN and Frank Ocean. It is clear that they’ve taken a stop forward from their YouTube covers. Fusing their harmonies with more intentionally produced tracks has moved them up to the next level. Their song “Grows Old” feels like a folk inspired tune you’d want to listen to under an entire forest of trees.
Their first full length album Cold Heart was released on March 9th, just in time for their Spring Tour. You can catch them on March 26th at Hawthorne Theater, or find future dates here. They’ve toured with both Tori Kelly and Chance The Rapper, as they’re gaining the recognition they deserve in the music industry.
