Swingin’ Utters / Success/ The Bombpops/ The Brass @ Hawthorne Theatre

The first week of November can be a depressing one for young people. The excitement of Halloween is over and post-sugar overdose headaches are in full effect, the weather is turning soggy and cold, and students are shellshocked after midterms and buying expensive travel tickets for the upcoming holidays. Luckily, the Hawthorne Theatre and Mike Thrasher Presents are kicking off this month with a show that is sure to put smiles on punk rockers’ faces all across Portland. November 5: San Francisco punk legends Swingin’ Utters. Supporting them are Success (Seattle), The Bombpops (San Diego), and The Brass (Portland).

Swingin’ Utters are required listening to any true fan of punk rock music. Forming in 1987, the Utters were essential in shaping the developing west coast punk style. They signed to Fat Wreck Chords in 1996 and have stayed with them ever since. The Swingin’ Utters most recent album Fistful of Hollow was released in 2014.

Seattle’s Success have been busy in 2015. Their album Radio Recovery came out on Red Scare early in the year. They’ve been on tour constantly since then, warming up stages for Millencolin and 7 Seconds. It’s no surprise they’re performing at The Fest in Gainesville, FL this year; catchy hooks sung with gruff, gravelly vocals by bearded guys in band shirts ensure that Success will be welcomed warmly by orgcore fanatics from all over the world.

The Bombpops play lightning fast, sugary sweet pop punk. Featuring dual vocalists performing tight harmonies, this band is evidence that SoCal pop punk is still alive and as energetic as ever. The Bombpops have toured with Teenage Bottlerocket and The Queers, and this year performed their first European tour. They last released their Can of Worms 7” in 2014.

The Brass are a Portland melodic hardcore band (á la No Trigger, A Wilhelm Scream). The band formed in 2013, releasing their Armsreach EP in early October this year. The Brass are slated to open for H2O in December in Portland.
