R.I.P. Tommy Ramone!

Written by on July 13, 2014

Rest in peace, Tommy Erdelyi (Ramone). Truly an inspiration. I wouldn’t be drumming if not for you. He taught us all the importance of simplicity, economy, and power, and making the drum parts as catchy as the guitar riffs. He wrote or co-wrote many of their biggest “hits”, including fan favorite, ‘Blitzkreig Bop’. Tommy Ramone, co-founder, and last original surviving member of the Ramones, died yesterday at his home in Ridgewood, Queens of cancer.

Tuesday’s episode of Visceral Volume will be dedicated to Tommy and feature plenty of his playing and production work, and will also include an interview I conducted last week with the incessantly touring, road-warriors, Toronto noise rock powerhouse/power trio, Metz, a band who surely would not exist if not for Tommy and his Ramones.

An inspiration to every (hardcore) punk, grunge/noise rocker, metal-head, outcast/social misfit, and rebellious record producer for the last 38 years. You will be sorely missed! The world was made a better place by your presence in it. Your contributions to the world of music and beyond will not be soon forgotten. Check out this fantastic piece by the New York Times, and remember we still have Marky (second and longest Ramone drummer and original Voidoid!).
