This Sunday, local three-piece Cry Babe will release a new 7’ recorded with Drunk Dial. Drunk Dial pay for studio time and ask bands to record and write one original song and one cover in the studio – the catch is that they have to be under the influence! This show is also going to kick off a tour of Oregon and California (dates below), the first ever for the indie-rockers, with an album on the horizon as well. A full length release to follow last year’s EP Soft Honk is sure to be hotly anticipated among Portland’s music scene as the band have built up a dedicated following with their unique, crunchy, indie style led by soaring, almost operatic vocals, backed up by an irresistible rhythm section.
This week I spoke to Rose, the band’s drummer. Interestingly, the excellent Cry Babe is actually her first band – she began drumming in order to jam with (Cry Babe vocals/guitar/synth and) friend Anaïs and the band grew from there. Bassist Maddie was added after the other members met them at a Daughter concert. It was a steep learning curve for Rose who admitted to me that she ‘wanted to fly back to Wisconsin’ due to the nerves she experienced before their first show! However, she has grown in confidence and is pleased with how her drumming has developed, saying that the addition of shredder Maddie on bass has influenced and encouraged her development as a musician.
The bands new release is set to be a very trippy original, with a cover of Hole’s ‘Violet’ acting as the B-side. Not only is it sounding great, but it’s also going to look fantastic – there will be a special limited edition of the vinyl with a nebula design available at the show on Sunday, but stock is very limited, so vinyl collectors should be sure to get there early! Regarding the new album, Rose says it’s going to be darker than their previous efforts, but also includes the happiest Cry Babe track to date, because ‘we need to give people something!’ A late Spring release is looking likely for the as-yet untitled full-length debut.
You can listen to my interview with Rose using the download link below. My call recorder recorded her voice very quietly, so I had to increase the volume in editing. However, this also means that my active listening is of rather uncomfortable volume, so please be aware. Apologies.
Cry Babe will play with Deathlist, Spoon Benders, and Elly Swope at their 7’ release party at the Liquor Store.
Soft Honk is the title track from Cry Babe’s 2019 EP.
