Alvvays is angst!! Their self-titled album was released in 2014 and featured dreamy lyrics by lead singer Molly Rankin. They’re bringing garage rock into pop, and it seems to work perfectly. I was a huge fan of their first full length album, and when I heard they were releasing a new album this September I wondered if it could live up to the teenage fantasy they had created with hits like ‘Archie, Marry Me’and ‘Adult Diversion’. When I first turned on Antisocialites on September 8th, I knew just by the name that it would not disappoint. ‘Plimsoll Punks’ is definitely the standout hit with constant twists and turns that your body follows seamlessly. Also, Molly hits those high notes at the end like it’s nothing. It fuels the angst from their last album with a sense of maturity. Closing it out with ‘Forget About Life’ they fade out and leave the effects of the album looming over you, wanting more. You can check out their music video for ‘Dreams Tonite’ a song that can only be described as well… dreamy. I get some major 70’s vibes and I love it.
Alvvays will be performing two sold out nights this week at Doug Fir Lounge (October 26 and 27). Portland has obviously been anticipating their arrival! You can find more information about future shows and releases on their website here. You can also purchase some pretty sweet Enamel pins! Also check out their artsy illustrations and other band stuff on Instagram.
