Julie Byrne // The Old Church 7/25

Written by on July 24, 2017

RIYL: Vashti Bunyan, Joni Mitchell, Julia Jacklin

Touring on the back of her second album Not Even Happiness, the ethereal Julie Byrne brings her folk songwriting to the Old Church on Tuesday, July 25th. An album like very little else in 2017, Not Even Happiness kicked off the year with a dose of nostalgia. Julie Byrne revitalizes the traditional sounds of Americana without losing its soul. She tugs at your deepest emotions through her own nomadic experiences.

Byrne’s voice wanders as she takes you on a tour across America, through the people and places that have touched her life. Her work can be used as soft sounds to accompany a traveler, a soundtrack to a sunny day outside in a garden or anything the listener can dream up as it accompanies you like a safety blanket. These songs reflect not only her growth and learning but can also be used as a mirror for one’s own changes as they encounter new experiences.

Featured on Pitchfork and NPR as a standout release, Not Even Happiness is the perfect album to fill The Old Church on a warm summer night. Byrne’s songs transcend and dance, creating a stunning performance. Her haunting voice and soft guitar will affect you as much as the experiences she’s woven into the record affected her. Her intimate show is not to be missed, as you will likely gain a companion in her record along with the transcendent experience of hearing it live.
