Grieves 5/19 Hawthorne Theater: Photos + Review
Written by Hannah Cantrell on May 20, 2015
After I interviewed rapper Grieves, I feel like I had a better sense of whom he was going into the show. After three opening acts he finally came on around 10 p.m. on Tuesday May 19th, 2015. Literally right when he hit the stage and put his mouth up to the microphone, I knew this was going to be an unforgettable show. He started off the show by playing the perfect mix of his old and new music, which I really enjoyed. It is such an indescribable feeling to be at a concert and feel the energy leaping off of the performer and onto the audience. It actually was difficult for me to focus on taking pictures, because I was having so much fun in the moment. Not to mention since the Hawthorne Theater is such an intimate venue, I was quite literally inches from him. Lesser performers would have not utilized this space well, but Grieves frequently traveled from side to side touching hands with his fans. Another aspect that made his performance so unique was his personality. He took the opportunity in between songs to tell us about memorable anecdotes from his course as a MC. On the other hand he also showed us his crude, yet hilarious sense of humor. By the time his set was winding down, while tired from standing for so many hours, I found myself wanting to keep hearing more and more. I hope by the time he comes to Portland again, more people will show up to hear a truly rare performer.
