Viking Twang Show 103, October 5, 2016
Good morning, welcome to Viking Twang Episode 102. We’re in the second week of the new school year, and I’m so busy that I only have time to sleep in class. But we definitely don’t want to leave you without the Twang. Hope you’re enjoying yourself and this return to Oregon fall weather.
In our second set today, we’re going to play songs from a new album by Caleb Klauder and Reeb Williams, called “Innocent Road.” But first: the Oregon Music Hall of Fame holds its tenth annual induction ceremony Saturday night at the Aladdin Theater. We’re going to play music by the four twangiest new members: Brian Berg of 44 Long, Pete Krebs, sideman inductee Paul Brainerd, and Fernando Viciconte.
– Turkey Red; W.C. Beck & the Portland Country Underground.
– Fall Off the Wagon; 44 Long. Brian Berg, who passed away last October, was the leader and guitar player for this Portland-based band, with Andy Ricker on guitar, Eric Furlong on bass, and Cory Burden on guitar. This is from their debut album, 1997’s Collect Them All. Brian passed away last October.
– Irregular Heart. This is also from Collect Them All.
– Ashes Back to Vegas; Pete Krebs. Pete has played all kinds of music over the years, from the punk-rock Hazel to the swingish Stolen Sweets. This is from his 1999 Cavity Search album, Sweet Ona Rose.
– Raven Maggie; Golden Delicious. Pete and Kevin Richey put this psycho-bluegrass band together in the late 1990s. This is from their 1997 album, Old School.
– Valediction; Richmond Fontaine. Paul Brainerd is entering the hall as a sideman, and that’s an understatement. He plays guitar, pedal steel, dobro, and trumpet, among other instruments, does arrangements and producing, and leads his own bands. This is an arrangement from Richmond Fontaine’s 2004 album, Post to Wire.
– Song of Stillness. Another instrumental arrangement; this is from Little Sue’s 2002 release, The Long Goodbye.
– Oye Mamacity; Fernando. Fernando Viciconte is a Portland staple. This is from his 1998 Spanish language release, Pacoina.
– Rainin’ Outside/Angelyne; Fernando. From 1999’s Old Man Motel.
Caleb Klauder isn’t yet a member of the Oregon Music Hall of Fame, but it’s hard to imagine he won’t be someday. He’s played in bands as diverse as the jam band Calobo to the old-time Foghorn String Band. He and his partner Reeb Willms just released a new album, Innocent Road, with his country band.
– Coming On Strong. Brenda Lee’s last hit, from 1966.
– Last Time I Saw You.
– Now’s The Time (C’est Le Moment).
– I’d Jump The Mississippi. A George Jones/Johnny Mathis composition from 1964.
– Montana Cowboy. An old Vern and Ray song.
– Innocent Road. Caleb wrote this and first released it on his 2007 album, Dangerous Mes and Poisonous Yous.
– There Goes My Love. That’s an old Buck Owens song.
– Chalk Up Another One. A Jimmy Martin song.
– Twang Theme; Countrypolitans.
