It’s a New Year, and we’ll preview its Eve on Viking Twang!

Good morning, welcome to Viking Twang Episode 71. My name is Randy Black; hope you had a great Christmas and are looking forward to Winter term and a new year.

We’re going to celebrate the arrival of 2016 with a bunch of music you can hear locally on New Year’s Eve in the first two sets, followed by some seasonal songs.

We’ll start with a set by the band I’m going to be dancing to on Thursday: the Caleb Klauder Country Band, which is hosting the New Year’s Eve Rhinestone Bash at the Spare Room. The band is Caleb on mandolin and guitar, Reeb Wilms on vocals and guitar, Russ Blake on pedal and steel guitars, Jesse Emerson on bass, and Ned Folkerth on drums. Eli Morrison opens the show.

There’s plenty of other great music being played around town on New Year’s Eve. Here’s a sampling, starting with one of my favorites, the Freak Mountain Ramblers.

7 – Don’t Let Go; Freak Mountain Ramblers. From their 2006 live at McMenamins album, Calling All Freaks. They’re playing their traditional NYE gig at McMenamins Kennedy School.
8 – Up On The Hill Where We Do The Boogie; Leftover Salmon. The John Hartford song from their 1999 album, The Nashville Sessions. They’ll be at the Roseland.
9 – That’s All She Wrote; Peter Rowan with the Del McCoury Band. Peter’s playing with Jerry Douglas at the Alberta Rose.
10 – Duke and Cookie; Jerry Douglas. Jerry wrote this with Sam Bush; from the 2012 album “Traveler.”
11 – Auld Lang Syne; Pink Martini. The New Years classic from their 2010 album of holiday songs, Joy to the World. They’ll be at the Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall.

Third Set
We’ll close the show with some songs about New Years from great artists.

12 – Happy New Years Blues; Mary Harris. This was Mary’s only recording, in St. Louis on October 31, 1935, with Charles Jordan on guitar and William Bunch, known as Peetie Wheatstraw, on piano.
13 – What Are You Doing New Year’s Eve? Ella Fitzgerald. Written by Frank Loesser in 1947; this is Ella’s 1960 version.
14 – Nothin’ New for New Year; Harry Connick Jr. featuring George Jones. From his 2003 album, Harry for the Holidays.
15 – New Year’s Resolution; Otis Redding and Carla Thomas. From their 1967 album, King and Queen.
16 – New Year’s Eve; Tom Waits. From his 2011 album, Bad As Me. That’s David Hidalgo from Los Lobos on the accordion, bass, and backup vocals.
