Viking Twang Show 48, July 1, 2015
Good morning, welcome to Viking Twang. My name is Randy Black. Considering we bill ourselves as a twangy show, we haven’t been that hillbilly lately. We’re going to make up for that this week with a show that features women country and bluegrass musicians, including plenty of locals. We’ll start with Connie Smith:

1 – Turkey Red; W.C. Beck and the Portland Country Underground.
2 – I’ll Come Running; Connie Smith. From 1967, one of her four top ten songs that year.
3 – Ain’t the Buying Kind; Deadwood Revival. Our favorites from the Olympic Peninsula; written
by Kim Trenarry and played with her husband Jason Mogi.
4 – I Wish I Was A Single Girl Again; Crooked Jades. By the great San Francisco band; a Roscoe
Holcombe song sung by Martha Hawthorne and Lisa Berman.
5 – Passing Train; Little Sue. From her 1997 debut album, Chimneys and Fishes.
6 – Hey Jingo; Mad Hattie. That’s Deanna Settlemeyer’s band from 2000; she now performs with
her husband Doug Sammons, performing around town now as Doug & Dee’s Hot Lovin’ Babies.

Second Set
7 – Scarlet Town; Gillian Welch. From her most recent album, The Harrow and the Harvest.
8 – Radio Operator; Roseanne Cash. From her 2006 album, Black Cadillac.
9 – Hit ‘Em Up Style; Carolina Chocolate Drops. From their 2010 album, Genuine Negro Jig;
that’s Rhiannon Giddens on the vocals.
10 – When Sorrows Encompass Me ‘Round; Betse Ellis. The great Kansas City fiddler; that’s her
version of a traditional song.

Third Set
11 – All My Love In Vain; Flat Mountain Girls. From their 2007 album, Idle Talk & Wicked Deeds.
12 – Glory; Lynn Conover. From her 2000 album, Strange Bird.
13 – The Light Of Day; Jim, Jennie, & the Pine Tops. A Pennsylvania band, Jim Krewson and
Jennie Bedford, from their 2002 album, One More in the Cabin.
14 – The Longest Night; Stairwell Sisters. The San Francisco band, from their 2005 song. Written
and sung by Edie Ladin, the banjo player. The liner notes say: “Evie didn’t mean to write such a sad song, but this love story gone awry just poured out on its own.”
15 – Little Bird of Heaven; the Reeltime Travelers. Written and sung by Martha Scanlon on the
Travelers’ 2002 album, Livin’ Reeltime, Thinkin’ Old Time.
16 – Simple; Bad Mitten Orchestre. From the Eugene band’s 2007 album, Garden of Eve.
17 – Twang Theme; Countrypolitans.
