The philosophy we hold true and dear over here at VATOS LOCOS is A Toda Madre O Un Desmadre, which is cholo for have as much fun as you can, and even then, you could probably still be having more fun, so never settle for a lame, boring, or mundane life. (Actually, roughly translated it's more of a "go big or go home"/"all or nothing"...same thing right?). We recognize music as the elixir of life that maintains us wanting to suck all the marrow out of life. Before I get really cheesy on you, I just want to give a quick run down of what will be going on in the upcoming weeks/months at VATOS LOCOS.
Basically here at VL each broadcast is compiled of songs taken from a mixtape that was made by your Vato Loco DJ, Melissa (I'm taking DJ name requests if anyone has anything good). Each mixtape is made prior to the broadcasting date, and often features a particular theme, motif, artist, genre, etc.
Why cassette tapes? you might ask. It's simple really. The internet has definitely made it easier to attain or find new music, but it has also made it harder. It's become a lot more distant-music has that is...it's become a lot harder to become more excited about a band that you only know via internet streaming, a tape is something tangible that can add weight to your experience as a listener. And of all music formats, tapes are the cheapest and most accesible way to experiment with new (new, as well as new to the listener) music.
VATOS LOCOS has plans on growing beyond just the weekly broadcast and hopes to develop a space for a community. Also currently working towards launching a mixtape exchange or library. However, for now, VL is in its infancy stages and is mainly focused on getting a community of music devotees excited about it. So far, only a few VATOS LOCOS Mixtapes have been created, and more are on their way.
Stay tuned to find out what kind of crazy things VL is up to, and in the meantime listen in Thursdays at 9PM at kpsu.org, and friend us on Facebook at: http://www.facebook.com/kpsuvatoslocos
