2009 has been many things, and as I've tried to make sense of exactly what those things have been, I thought it would be a good idea to take a look back at the year with an eye for the live musical guests that we were able to bring into the studio. When Blasphuphmus Radio came back on the air, I was initially hesitant about having live guests on the show, but very quickly found myself feeling the urge to set up mics and help carry heavy amplifiers. I did, eventually, get my wish, and pulled in a wide assortment of musical styles throughout the year. Here, now, is a chance to review anything you missed, and offer it a second time (and in another form) if you didn't.
The show opens with a selection of acoustic artists: two out of towners (Honey Vizer and Ghost Town Jenny), and two local artists from the Battlesnakes Collective (Alpha Protist and Nil Admirari). Alpha Protist has made a previous appearance on the show as a guest DJ, so it was good to get him in to play something live. (Hopefully we'll be hearing more of the Collective in 2010.) Ghost Town Jenny was just passing through PDX, and having met her before I thought it would be a great opportunity to get her in the studio. Honey I've known for years, and this particular song is new to me, but now makes me cry when I hear it. Nice job, Honey.
After that, we move into a more experimental set, with Santiago Latorre and Horde of Two. Santiago came all the way from Italy, and through Ricardo Wang, was interested in doing some live radio. While this particular track I played was most electronic, his usual sounds involve Saxophone, looping pedals, and other electronic effects. It was extremely excited to meet him, and felt like the show came out excellent. Horde of Two is Wendy Atkinson and David Lester, both movers and shakers in the scene who choose our humble program for some live Guitar and Bass action. I was really excited to see them again, and I think the performance (and interview) from that show came out excellent. I closed that set with a rock song by The Woolen Men for a change of pace, local boys that are making a buzz, and just so happened to be my roommates at the time. Funny how that worked out.
I ended the show with a long selection by Mangled Bohemians, another Ricardo Wang hook-up, who play sort of dreamy Spacemen 3 type stuff. My incidental music for this show was from a live performance by sci-fi soundtrack artist Mortal Engines, the first band that I had appear on my show in 2009. It was good to bring it all back to the (near) beginning, and if you ask me, this show came out pretty decent.
Special Thanks go out to my Brother Kyle and my Sister Karly, who are putting me up for the holidays, and didn't get the least bit upset when I took over their living room to record this podcast. You guys are awesome.
There's still one more (at least) show this year, so keep your eyes peeled for more podcast action, and more maudlin blog posts. It's how we roll.
Be seeing you.
