There are times in our lives when we suddenly have to think about the future, at a moment when the past suddenly demands our attention. This happened to me recently, and also intersected with the accumulation of some new music and my weekly radio show. After percolating on things for a while, I decided to mix all these elements together into a show called, "Living: Then And Now." All of these songs shed light on different aspects of everyday life, from relationships, the mundanity of everyday existentialism, coping with unexpected death, and ultimately, old age. While a single hour can only address a narrow slice of all that goes into Living this thing called Life, I think I managed to fit in a variety of perspectives on this particular notion, and more to the point, managed to get Opal, Alice Cooper, Spike Jones, and Grinderman all into a show that ends with The Modern Lovers. Personally, it's a DJing triumph that I'm rather proud of.
This show is actually a podcast-only broadcast, which is new territory for this show. We did offer a Halloween show as a Podcast, but that one made up for a botched live broadcast that listeners did hear. And our July 4th Show this year was also podcast only, but was a retrocast for starters, and was making up for being out of town that week. So, this is the first show that did not originate in a live broadcast. The main reason has to do with musical accomodation; The Passengers were running late for a performance on What's This Called?, and rather than cut them off, I forfeited my hour to let them play. But rather than throw out this show I prepared, I decided to record it at home, and offer it online.
This show also offers some of the great musical discoveries I've made recently that I haven't been able to fit into my own shows. The first Alice Cooper album, Opal, Stereolab, The Grifters, and Titus Andronicus are all amazing recordings that I cannot believe I was living without, previously. Titus Andronicus are totally picking up where ...And You Will Know Us By The Train Of Dead left off, and The Grifters are like the other Pavement that I totally missed out on the first time around. Of course, I should have been listening to Stereolab for longer, and more often, and Opal is just amazing. So yeah, good stuff. Since my weekly show isn't always about the new music I've discovered, this was a great change to let ya'll know what I've been digging lately. I hope you can get into it, too.
As November and December signal the end of the year, I have precious few shows left in 2009. So, tune in to hear some great theme shows, special guests, more Holiday Music, and a possibly celebrity appearance in the weeks to come. Just cause the season is changing, doesn't mean that your favorite radio is.
See ya in seven.
