Hop Along is an indie folk-rock band from Philadelphia fronted by powerhouse Frances Quinlan. Quinlan is a storyteller— the kind that can get you moving while simultaneously painting pictures in your head. While she’s known for her great songwriting she is equally celebrated for her unique voice and vocal melodies. What makes her vocals stand out is how she bends and strains her trademark melodies, making the words sound more passionate and believable. Backing Quinlan up in Hop Along is her brother Mark on drums, Joe Reinhart (formally of Algernon Cadwallader) on bass and Tyler Long on bass. The backing band crafts tight yet spacious and driving pop melodies with dance beats that will make you, dare I say it, want to hop along. Thoughtful and well crafted lyrics are balance themselves perfectly with skillful and at times mathy instrumentation to keep you engaged song after song.
Hop Along will be performing an all ages show at the Wonder Ballroom on August 10th. This tour will help promote their fourth album entitled Bark Your Head Off, Dog, released earlier this year on Saddle Creek Records. In an interview with Noisey, Quinlan explained that a major theme on the album was the way that women are socialized to shrink themselves down. On stage Quinlan takes up space and commands attention with her presence. Hop Along will have you thinking critically about social issues and dancing at the same time. This show is not to be missed.
