Herbie Hancock at Schnitzer Hall, March 2. BE THERE!!!

Written by on February 26, 2018

The Legendary, effervescent, chameleon-like Jazz pianist Herbie Hancock, one of the most innovative musicians of all time, will be with us Friday, March 2, at Arlene Schnitzer hall.

From his early days with Miles, to funk explorations like Headhunter and the groundbreaking video “Rockit”, as well as collaborations with virtually ALL the greats of Jazz/Rock/Blues, Hancock is in ways the antithesis of jazz elitist Wynton Marsalis. He believes ALL MUSIC styles are worthy and of interest and is constantly finding ways to integrate and synthesize new sounds into his vocabulary. He is nothing if not eclectic, but can hard bop with the very best.

The most constant refrain from reviews of Herbie Hancock concerts? “No two concerts are ever alike. No two pieces are ever alike.” For me, THAT is the essence of Jazz.

Drummer extraordinaire Vinnie Colaiuta, bassist James Genus, Guitarist Lionele Loueke and keys and sax man Terrance Martin round out the quintet that Herbie brings with him to Portland. These
are players with deep, varied experience and phenomenal technique and creativity. We are in for some serious ear and brain candy with this group.
